Secretary of State booth also has new organ donor info

Visitors to the 2007 Michigan International Auto Show in Grand Rapids can learn how to get the exciting "Spectacular Peninsulas" license plate as well as participate in a new program that encourages organ donation by giving motorists a heart sticker to put on their driver's license, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land announced today.

The Department of State will have a booth in DeVos Place across the from the Chevrolet display on the main show floor. The auto show is open to the public Feb. 1 - 4.

"I encourage guests to check out the fresh designs of Michigan's license plates as they enjoy the new vehicles on display," Land said. "I also hope everyone will sign up at our booth to become an organ donor. One person's donation can save or improve the lives of up to 50 people."

The "Spectacular Peninsulas" graphic plate and the new standard white plate went on sale Jan. 1. The "Spectacular Peninsulas" design replaces the 10-year-old "Great Lakes Splendor" plate. While new sales of the Splendor plate have stopped, drivers who already have one may continue renewing it if they wish.

The white plate replaces the 25-year-old blue standard plate. A recent state law requires the Department of State to retire the blue plate. The new white plate has better visibility due to its reflective background, which aids law enforcement. It's also more rust-resistant and is more efficient to produce.

People joining the Michigan Organ Donor Registry will receive a heart-logo sticker to put on their driver's license or state identification card. The sticker, authorized by a new state law, alerts medical and emergency personnel that the individual has agreed to be an organ donor. Those already on the registry, should re-enroll to receive a heart logo sticker and the donor designation on their driver's license.

A department representative will be at the booth to answer questions about available services. In addition, Vince and Larry, the crash test dummies, will be on hand to greet visitors.
