Secretary of State booth to sell great plate for great state

Visitors to the 2007 North American International Auto Show can drive off from the marquee Motor City event with their vehicle sporting Michigan's new graphic license plate, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land announced today.

"After taking in the fresh, exciting designs of world automakers, Michigan drivers can take home our state's new ‘Spectacular Peninsulas' license plate," Land said. "We're proud to offer this attractive plate that celebrates Michigan's vibrant cities and rural beauty at the 100th anniversary of Detroit's auto show. Visitors from around the globe will be able to see how truly spectacular Michigan's peninsulas are.

"And on the centennial of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association and its auto show, I want to congratulate the group for building the auto show into a world-class production that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city. The association's efforts have helped put Detroit at the center of car culture."

The Secretary of State booth is in the Cobo Center concourse across from the Macomb Hall entrance to the main show floor. The auto show is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Jan. 13-20, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Jan. 21.

Besides selling the new graphic plate, the booth will offer auto show-goers the opportunity to sign up for Michigan's organ-donor registry. Those registering will receive a heart-logo sticker to put on their driver's license or state identification card.

Vince and Larry, the crash test dummies, also will be part of the Secretary of State's auto show booth and welcome visitors. Additional services at the booth will be the ability to register to vote, buy your own driving record and change the address on your driver's license or personal identification card. Other Secretary of State services are available at the branch office across the street from the Cobo Center at 550 Washington Blvd.

People can buy the plate for $5 for use on their vehicle. "Spectacular Peninsulas" buyers can renew their vehicle registration early if they choose to for a fee in addition to the $5. Visitors also can buy collector versions of the graphic plate for $10.

The graphic plate as well as the new standard white plate went on sale at all branch offices this month. The white plate replaces the 25-year-old blue plate while the "Spectacular Peninsulas" plate replaces the 10-year-old "Great Lakes Splendor" graphic plate. While new sales of the "Great Lakes Splendor" plate have stopped, drivers who already have one may continue renewing it if they wish.
