AUGUST 31, 2005
With the devastation of the Gulf Coast by Hurricane Katrina, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land says that even small acts can have a significant impact in helping victims.
In fact, something as simple as applying for or renewing the "Proud To Be American" license plate can benefit those struggling in the aftermath of one of the nation’s worst natural disasters. Proceeds from the fundraising plate support relief efforts by the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
"One of our country’s greatest strengths is the compassion and generosity of the American people," Land said. "The Proud To Be American plate was developed in response to the terrible tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001. Michigan residents rallied to the challenge, purchasing more than 10,000 plates in the month following that calamity.
"Now our country faces another tremendous blow, and Michigan residents can again show support for their fellow Americans by buying or renewing a Proud To Be American plate."
The red, white and blue license plate features a dark silhouette of Michigan with the American flag superimposed over it. The phrase "Proud To Be American" is featured across the bottom.
Residents ordering the license plate pay $35 in addition to their annual registration fee. Twenty-five dollars is then divided between the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, with the remaining $10 paying for the production and mailing of the plate. A disability license plate is available at no extra cost.
Each plate renewal generates $10, which is also shared between the two charities.
Since the Proud To Be American fundraising-plate program began in October 2001, nearly 49,400 plates have been sold and more than $2.1 million has been raised for the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
