Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land today encouraged voters to participate in the Tuesday, May 3 election. It will be the second time that voters go to the polls under Michigan’s new consolidated election law.

Voters in every county will cast ballots as nearly 530 of Michigan’s 552 local school districts conduct elections.

"This is your chance to make your voice heard," said Land, Michigan’s chief election officer. "Please don’t pass it up. Our schools and communities need your input. That’s what democracy is all about.

"We’re working hard to modernize and energize Michigan’s election process. The consolidated election law makes it easier for voters. By narrowing election dates to four a year, voters can better plan to participate. We’re giving people the tools that they need to vote in a convenient, efficient manner. Now it’s up to you."

The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot by mail is 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30. Residents who want to vote an absentee ballot in person must do so by 4 p.m. Monday, May 2. Voters who qualify for an emergency absentee ballot may obtain one until 4 p.m. on Election Day.

The deadline to register to vote in the May 3 election has passed. Eligible residents can, however, register for future elections at any time.

The consolidated election law was signed in January 2004. It makes elections more efficient and cost-effective by limiting elections to four a year. It also provides greater consistency, which allows voters to mark election dates on their calendars; reduces or eliminates election costs for school districts; and puts elections in the hands of local clerks, who are trained election professionals.

The first election under the law was Feb. 22 when voters in 28 counties cast ballots.
