Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land today issued the following statement regarding the national election in Iraq and the contributions of the Southgate, Mich., community toward that effort:
"I share the pride of all Americans and our Iraqi friends as we witness the birth of a democracy. Iraqis around the world have taken an important step in shaping their own destinies by registering to vote. Beginning today, they will make their voices heard by casting ballots for the first time. Both of our nations continue to sacrifice so that this day would arrive. With that in mind, I encourage all Iraqis who registered to stand tall and vote.
"It is an honor for Michigan to host one of the registration and polling sites established across the globe. The Southgate community is serving as a gateway to freedom.
I hope that the Iraqis’ love of freedom reminds us all of our responsibilities as Americans. It’s a lesson we must never forget.
"I applaud the people of Iraq as they participate in this historic moment. I also commend President Bush for his vigorous agenda that promotes democracy throughout the world. That bold vision has allowed the will of the Iraqi people to take root. While there is still work to be done, the fact that the Iraqi people are taking control of their destinies ensures a bright future for their proud land."
