Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land announced today that 67.5 percent of registered voters cast ballots in Tuesday’s general election, setting a Michigan turnout record of over 4.8 million.

Last week Land projected that 4.5 million voters would participate.

"From the courthouse to the White House, the voices of Michigan residents were heard loud and clear on Election Day," Land said. "The high voter turnout in Michigan and across the nation is a significant victory for our democratic process."

Land applauded Michigan’s election workers for their dedication and integrity during a long day at the polls.

"One of the reasons Michigan is considered the gold standard in election administration is the professionalism and commitment of the people who serve as poll workers and election officials," Land said. "These men and women deserve our thanks for a job well done."

The voter turnout figures will remain unofficial until certified by the Board of State Canvassers, which meets Nov. 22.

There were 7.16 million Michigan voters registered to participate in the Nov. 2 election.

The Secretary of State’s Bureau of Elections will post official election returns, when they are available, on its Web site. Unofficial results are currently available on the site.
