• Permissible Purposes for Record Requests
The requirements for purchasing a list from the Michigan Department of State follow guidelines set forth by the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act of 1994, as amended (18 USC 2721 et seq.), and Michigan's driver privacy protection laws (1997 PA 99 to 102, as amended).

• Self-Insurance
The Secretary of State certifies self-insurers in the State of Michigan. Applicants for self-insurance must have 26 or more motor vehicles registered in Michigan and meet other specific qualification criteria. All self-insurers are assessed for the operation of the Department of State Assigned Claims Facility based on number of vehicles self-insured.
