If you are age 18 or older, before you can get a Michigan driver's license you must:
Complete a minimum 30 days of practice driving on a temporary instruction permit (TIP).
Pass a driving skills test. The driving skills test will be administered by a third-party testing organization approved by the Secretary of State. A person with a valid out-of-state driver's license may have this requirement waived.
In some instances, because of medical conditions or other reasons, restrictions may be placed on your driver's license. Drivers licensed for the first time will be placed on probation for a minimum of three years.
If you have a valid license from another state, the written and driving skills tests may be waived. The Secretary of State will contact your previous home state to obtain your driving record, which then becomes part of your Michigan driving record.
A driver's license may be obtained at any Secretary of State office. An original operator's license costs $25 and a chauffeur's license is $35. Additional fees and testing requirements may be required for special licenses, group designations and endorsements, such as a Commercial Driver License or motorcycle endorsement.
Note: Your situation may differ. Please check with the Department of State Information Center toll free at (888) SOS-MICH (767-6424) to make sure you have all the correct paperwork before going to a Secretary of State office.
