Enhanced Driver's License and ID Card Security Feature - RFID Chip

Your enhanced driver's license or state identification card contains a Radio Frequency Identification chip to facilitate border crossings and homeland security efforts.

What is the RFID chip?

The RFID chip is part of the Radio Frequency Identification security system.  Radio Frequency Identification is a wireless technology that stores and retrieves data remotely.

Your RFID chip does not include any personal information, just a unique reference number.

What is the purpose of the RFID chip?

The unique reference number assigned to your RFID chip allows the Customs and Border Protection agent to quickly and accurately verify your identity and citizenship.  When you enter the U.S. at a land or sea port, your unique RFID number will be referenced against a secured database to verify your identity for border-crossing purposes.

Is the RFID chip safe?

RFID chips present no danger.  The chips don't contain a battery or other energy source.  The unique reference number is only activated when read by an RFI scanner.

Why was I given a sleeve for my enhanced license or ID?

Each enhanced license and state ID will be mailed with a special sleeve that can be used to store the card.  The sleeve shields your enhanced driver's license or state ID card from unauthorized Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) readers.  When you need to access your enhanced driver's license or state ID card, remove it from its protective sleeve.  Keep the card in its sleeve when not in use.
