"S" School Bus Endorsement Required for School Bus Drivers

A picture of a school bus

To comply with requirements of the federal Motor Carrier Safety Improvement Act, the Secretary of State requires commercial driver applicants who operate a school bus to obtain an “S” endorsement on their driver’s license.

To receive an “S” endorsement two tests are required -- a written knowledge test and a driving skills test.  All school bus drivers must pass both tests and have a "P" endorsement.

The “S” endorsement fee is $5. This fee is in addition to any applicable driver’s license correction or renewal fees and driving skills test fees.
