GDL Testing

Level 1 Learner's License
Applicants must pass a vision test, however no written knowledge test is administered at Level 1.  A written knowledge test is not administered to anyone presenting a Michigan Segment 1 driver education certificate.  Out-of-state driver education certificates require an applicant to take the 40-question Michigan Original Operator License Test.

Level 2 Intermediate License
No vision or written knowledge test is required when upgrading from a Michigan Level 1 Learner's License to a Level 2 Intermediate License.  Applicants must pass a driving skills test with an approved independent third-party tester.  Applicants who are converting an out-of-state driver license are required to take a vision test.  A list of approved independent road skills testers can be obtained from any branch office or from this Web site at  Third-Party Testing Organization Locator.

Level 3 Full License
No additional testing is required at Level 3.  Level 3 eligibility is determined by a computer program when an applicant meets the Level 3 requirements.
