| Renewing at a Branch Office |
Renewals can be processed at any Secretary of State branch office up to six months before the expiration date. To prevent delays or additional trips, be sure that you have all the documents you need before you arrive. Common documents needed for renewals are:
-
Renewal notice or old registration for each registration
-
Proof of insurance for each registration (unless you have the current renewal notice for each registration showing a PIN for each one)
-
Driver License
-
Cash, check, or money order. Secretary of State branch offices do not accept credit or debit cards, with the exception of Plus offices and Super Centers, which accept the Discover credit card*.
Plus offices and Super Centers also offer a Self Service Station that will process prepared application tab renewals. The Self Service Stations accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and Branded Debit Cards. To locate the nearest Plus office or Super Center, click here.
If a license plate expires on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the expiration date of the license plate is extended to include the next business day before assessing a late fee.
Branch hours:
- 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
- 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, except for offices in city centers which are open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- New PLUS and SUPER!Center branch offices provide extended hours on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- SUPER!Centers also offer Saturday hours from 9 a.m. to noon.
- Smaller offices may close for a lunch hour, and all branches are closed on state holidays.
* Customers are assessed a nominal 1.75 percent fee to cover the cost of using the credit card option in a PLUS office or SUPER!Center. For example, a $25 transaction would result in a handling fee of about 44 cents. That fee is not passed on to customers who use automated transaction systems such as Web or touch-tone renewal because they do not involve a face-to-face transaction.
