License plates receive a tab showing both the month and year of expiration. Individually-owned passenger vehicles and light trucks expire on the owner's birthday in the month shown.
For all blue and white plates, the tab is placed on the lower-right corner of the plate.
For Commemorative, Great Lakes Splendor (bridge), new standard plate (white with blue bar), Spectacular Peninsulas plates, and fundraising plates, the tab is placed on the upper-right corner of the plate.
If your tab is lost, stolen, or mutilated and you still have the valid license plate, you can get a new tab at a Secretary of State branch office. Bring your registration or plate number. Replacement tabs cost $5. Individuals requesting a tab only replacement on a blue and white plate, must be issued either a new standard or Spectacular Peninsulas plate and tab. There is no fee to replace a tab returned as defective.
