State Police Receives USDOT Truck Safety Awards
LANSING. The Michigan State Police (MSP) received two U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Leadership Awards at the National FMCSA Leadership Conference held in Bellevue, Wash. on April 25, 2012. This is the fifth time in six years that the MSP has been recognized for its commercial vehicle enforcement initiatives.
The MSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED) was presented with the 2012 Leadership Award in recognition of the state's exceptionally low commercial vehicle fatality rate, which continues to be below the national average. From 2008 through 2010 (which is the latest data available), Michigan had a truck-involved fatality rate of less than 0.10 per 100 million total vehicle miles traveled; the lowest rate in the Midwest and one of the lowest in the nation. The national average for the same time period was 0.18 per 100 million total vehicle miles traveled.
The MSP Criminal Justice Information Center (CJIC) also received the 2012 Leadership Award for data quality. This award recognizes the reporting of timely, accurate and complete commercial motor vehicle crash and inspection data to FMCSA during fiscal year 2011.
Insp. Randy L. Coplin, assistant division commander of the MSP CVED, accepted the award on behalf of the MSP. Coplin attributed the state's success to a commitment to traffic safety by motor carrier officers assigned to CVED, as well as traffic safety partners including the Michigan Department of Transportation, Michigan Center for Truck Safety and Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. Special recognition also went to members of the MSP CJIC, who ensure crash reports are processed in a timely and accurate manner.
The annual conference is attended by representatives of state commercial vehicle enforcement agencies from all 50 states.
