A portion of the Bill Nicholl's Trail in Ontonagon County just north of the Firesteel trestles has been closed due to run-off erosion along the grade. The wash-out on the multi-use trail occurred sometime last weekend, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
Heavy rain late Friday night and early Saturday morning likely caused the erosion damage to the trail. The wash-out was reported to the DNR on Sunday, May 4, and the area was barricaded immediately.
The temporary closure will continue until repairs can be made to
restore the grade. The closure extends from the M-38 trail crossing on the south end to the Henwood Mine area on the north end. The public is urged to stay away from this dangerous area, as the banks of the grade continue to slough off and cave in to the adjacent drainage.
