High School Students Experience Life as Troopers; Michigan District of Kiwanis Sponsors Program

Contact:  Ms. Nancy Shaffer, MSP Training Academy, (517) 322-6319

June 12, 2006

Lansing - This week, 46 Michigan high school students will experience the training needed to become Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers during the 31st annual Michigan District of Kiwanis Student Trooper Program.    The program kicked-off yesterday at the MSP Training Academy in Lansing.

Between wake-up at 5 a.m. and lights-out at 10 p.m., the students will learn about traffic and criminal law, defensive tactics, firearms and marksmanship fundamentals, first-aid, water safety, narcotics, search and seizure, patrol tactics, crash investigations, law enforcement career opportunities, forensic science, conservation law, underwater recovery and character issues of leadership.

“This program provides young people with a glimpse of what it takes to become a Michigan State Police trooper,” said Captain Gene W. Hoekwater, MSP Training Division commander.  “During the week –long program, students learn law enforcement fundamentals and the importance of education, teamwork and determination in reaching their goals.”

The school is designed for highly motivated young men and women who are seriously interested in a career in law enforcement.  Each student is sponsored by one of the Michigan District of Kiwanis clubs located throughout the state.  The school is hosted by the MSP with assistance from deputies and officers from other Michigan police agencies.
