May 9, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will oversee a project to repair I-94 Business Loop (Washtenaw Avenue) in Ann Arbor starting Tuesday, May 13. Repairs stretch from US-23 Business Route (N.Main Street), to just east of US-23, on the east side of Ann Arbor. Improvements include milling and resurfacing the pavement, installation of traffic loops for signal control, and curb and gutter work.
Work will be completed in stages to reduce the inconvenience to motorists and residents. In each phase, crews will first install traffic loops in the pavement, then work to mill and pave the roadway.
Crews are allowed to work from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays, for work on the traffic loops, and curb and gutter. Paving operations will take place around-the-clock, seven days a week, except in the residential section of I-94 BL. Between Stadium Boulevard and Geddes Avenue, paving will take place only from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Night work will be allowed only in the non-residential sections of I-94 BL.
The various work zones and timelines are as follows:
- Phase I involves work between Hogback Road and Stadium Boulevard from early May to the end of May.
- Phase II involves work between Geddes Avenue and Main Street. Construction is expected to start after Memorial Day and continue to late June.
- Phase III involves work between Stadium Boulevard and Geddes Avenue. Construction is expected to start after the July Fourth holiday and last until mid-August.
One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times on I-94 BL. Motorists are advised to drive with caution and watch for slowdowns when traveling through the work zone. Total project cost is $1.6 million.
