August 4, 2009 -- The public is invited to celebrate 25 years of service on the Pere Marquette, Amtrak service between Grand Rapids and Chicago, when the train stops for regularly scheduled service in Grand Rapids, Holland, Bangor and St. Joseph/Benton Harbor on Wednesday, Aug. 5. To commemorate the Silver Anniversary, ceremonies will start approximately one-half hour prior to train arrival in each city.
Speakers are expected to include a host of local mayors, city leaders, federal and state legislators, as well as Amtrak and Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) officials. Included are: State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle (Grand Rapids); Mayors George Heartwell (Grand Rapids), Al McGeehan (Holland), Bob Judd (St. Joseph); City Manager Mike Selden (Bangor); U.S. Rep. Vern Ehlers; State Sen. Ron Jelinek; State Reps. Bob Genetski, Joseph Haveman, Arlan Meekhof, John Proos and Mary Valentine; and staff representing U.S. Reps. Peter Hoekstra and Fred Upton. Amtrak officials include Marc Magliari, media relations manager (Grand Rapids); Tracy Robinson, marketing director (Holland) and Derrick James, senior government affairs officer (aboard the Pere Marquette).
