Contact:  Josephine Klotz, Training Academy, (517) 322-6319
Agency: State Police

LANSINGThis week, 57 Michigan high school students are living the life of a Michigan State Police (MSP) trooper-recruit during the annual Michigan American Legion Student Trooper Program, at the MSP Training Academy in Lansing.  The program is conducted by MSP troopers with assistance from deputies and local police officers.

From July 26 to 31, between wake-up at 5 a.m. and lights-out at 10 p.m., the students will  learn about traffic and criminal law, defensive tactics, firearms and marksmanship fundamentals, first-aid, water safety, patrol tactics, crash investigations, law enforcement career opportunities, forensic science, conservation law, underwater recovery, and leadership.

"This is an intensive law enforcement training program designed to promote the importance of education and build teamwork," said First Lieutenant Michael Krumm of the MSP Training Academy.  "The goal is to give the students life skills that will help them reach their goals."

The Michigan American Legion Student Trooper Program is designed for highly motivated young men and women who are seriously interested in a career in law enforcement.  Each student is sponsored by one of the Michigan American Legion offices located throughout the state.

The students accepted to the July 2009 Michigan American Legion Student Trooper Program are:
