June 29, 2009 - 43 Cyber Tips Lead to Arrest of Cedar Springs Man for Child Sexually Abusive Activity

Grand RapidsFollowing a 10-month investigation, members of the Michigan State Police (MSP) Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, Grand Rapids Office, arrested Leonard Glen Overmyer III, 44, of Cedar Springs, Mich.  Officers also served a search warrant at his home. 

"This investigation was initiated after 43 cyber tips were received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC)," said Detective First Lieutenant Tom Kish of the MSP Digital Evidence Section.  "The officers assigned to the ICAC Grand Rapids Office took aggressive steps to identify and arrest the individual responsible for such significant efforts to exploit children." 

The Kent County Prosecutor's Office charged Overmyer with two counts of Child Sexually Abusive Activity and two counts of Using a Computer to Commit a Crime.  He was arraigned in the 63rd Rockford District Court and bond was set at $10,000.

The Michigan ICAC Task Force is a multijurisdictional team coordinated by the MSP Digital Evidence Section.  The ICAC program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice, allocates funding for training, equipment, and investigative efforts to 61 task forces nationwide. 

The Grand Rapids Office of the MSP Digital Evidence Section is one of five satellite locations around the state.  The Grand Rapids Office covers all west-Michigan counties and is responsible for the investigation of any NCMEC cyber tips or other Internet related child exploitation cases in the region. 

The Michigan ICAC Task Force includes a diverse representation of partners, including officers from the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, MSP, Michigan Department of Corrections, Bellaire Police Department, East Grand Rapids Police Department, Fruitport Township Police Department, Ingham County Sheriff's Department, Kalkaska County Sheriff's Department, Kent County Sheriff's Department, Kentwood Police Department, Lansing Community College Department of Public Safety, Livingston County Sheriff's Department, Livonia Police Department, Macomb County Sheriff's Department, Midland Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff's Department, Muskegon Police Department, Muskegon Township Police Department, New Baltimore Police Department, Ottawa County Sheriff's Department and Troy Police Department.
