New signal in Munising to be activated June 18

Contact:  James Lake, MDOT Office of Communications, 906-786-1830, ext. 323
Agency: Transportation

June 17, 2009 -- A new traffic signal at the M-28/Elm Street intersection in the city of Munising will be operational in flashing mode on Thursday, June 18, and fully operational on Monday, June 29.

The new signal will flash amber for through-traffic on M-28, and flash red for Elm Street traffic until June 29. At that time, the signal will be fully operational, providing green, amber and red lights for traffic in all four directions at the intersection.

"This flashing mode will give motorists a chance to adjust to the new signal's presence, prior to its full activation," said Jack Bedard, manager of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Escanaba Transportation Service Center.

On behalf of the city of Munising, contractors installed the new signal at the intersection. In cooperation with the city, MDOT recently repainted the four-lane section of M-28 to three lanes, including a center left-turn lane, to accommodate this new signal.

MDOT: Working to improve our state roads and bridges.
