Pinckney Recreation Area Celebrating Michigan State Parks'90th Anniversary on June 20 with 'GO-Get Outdoors' Events

Pinckney Recreation Area will be celebrating Michigan State Parks 90th anniversary on Saturday, June 20, with a number of "GO-Get Outdoors" activities, including geocaching, bike riding demos, children's crafts, a canoe/kayak tour, and more.

Geocaching begins at 8 a.m. with five easy caches located near the Silver Lake Unit of Pinckney Recreation Area. A listing of coordinates will be available at the park headquarters.

The Michigan Mountain Biking Association, in conjunction with Cannondale Bike, will be hosting bike demos starting at 10 a.m. at the Silver Lake Beach parking lot. At noon, there will be an all abilities "No Drop Guided Ride" beginning at the beach parking lot.

For registered campers, there will be a kids' craft program at 10 a.m. at the Bruin Lake campground host site, and an explorer guide will conduct a guided hike around the campground at a yet to be determined time.

There will be a three-hour paddle tour around the Half-Moon Chain of Lakes. The paddle tour will begin at noon and end at 3 p.m. at the Bruin Lake boat launch. Registration for the tour is required by contacting the park ahead of time at (734) 426-4913. Those interested in renting a canoe should contact the concessionaire at (734) 878-2233.

Running Fit will be hosting a free five-mile fun run, starting at 3 p.m. from the Silver Lake Beach Unit. Preregistration is required at www.runningfit.net.

Cake and ice cream, sponsored by Running Fit, will be served at 4 p.m. at the Silver Lake Beach and Bruin Lake Campground in celebration of Michigan State Parks' 90th anniversary.

Pinckney Recreation Area is located at 8555 Silver Hill Rd. in Pinckney. For information about these events, the park, directions to Silver Lake Beach and Bruin Lake Campground, accessibility, or persons needing accommodations to attend this event, contact the park at (734) 426-4913 (TTY/TDD 711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired), or visit www.michigan.gov/pinckney. Camping reservations can be made online at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling the DNR central reservation system at 800-447-2757.

There is no charge for the events. However, all motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.
