Wednesday, November 16, 2011: Senior Companion Volunteer Day

WHEREAS, Michigan's 14 Senior Companion programs provide low-income adults age 55 and older challenging and meaningful volunteer opportunities in 47 counties throughout the state; and, 

WHEREAS, partnering with more than 200 non-profit organizations, Senior Companion programs meet a variety of personal and community needs that make a positive difference in areas such as long term care, poverty, health care and safety; and,

WHEREAS, statewide, an average of 640 senior companion volunteers contribute more than 530,000 hours of service, and their significant contributions enrich the lives of so many in the communities in which they serve; and,

 

WHEREAS, on this day, we join with the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging to raise awareness of Michigan's Senior Companion programs and to recognize the outstanding service of senior companion volunteers currently serving throughout the state; 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Wednesday, November 16, 2011 as Senior Companion Volunteer Day in Michigan.
