WHEREAS, nearly 26 million children and adults throughout the United States are living with diabetes and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined; and,

WHEREAS, in Michigan, approximately 1.65 million citizens have diabetes; it is estimated that 2 million adults in Michigan have pre-diabetes and 60 percent of these individuals may develop type 2 diabetes within the next six years; and,

WHEREAS, a person's risk of developing diabetes strongly relates to the number of and the relationship to family members that have diabetes; obesity, being overweight and participating in little to no physical activity also contributes to the risk of diabetes; and,

WHEREAS, moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week, along with moderate weight loss, significantly reduces the risk of diabetes in people with pre-diabetes; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Department of Community Health to raise awareness of diabetes in Michigan, and we encourage citizens throughout the state to observe this month by finding ways to get active and to learn more about the risks of this devastating disease;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2011 as Diabetes Awareness Month in Michigan.
