November 2011: Adoption Month & November 22, 2011: Adoption DayDate: November 01, 2011 - November 30, 2011

WHEREAS, more than 14,000 children in Michigan live away from their birth families in foster care and every year, an estimated 107,000 children in foster care throughout the United States are available for adoption; and,
WHEREAS, Adoption Day in Michigan was established by the Michigan Supreme Court and the Michigan Department of Human Services in 2003; and,
WHEREAS, on November 22, 2011, more than 30 Michigan courts will celebrate Adoption Day by finalizing adoptions, holding special events for adoptive families and providing educational materials for citizens in regard to the adoption process; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Department of Human Services, Michigan Courts and various adoption agencies throughout the state to raise awareness of adoption needs and the adoption process in Michigan;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2011 as Adoption Month and Tuesday, November 22, 2011 as Adoption Day in Michigan.
