WHEREAS, aquatic invasive species include organisms and plants that are introduced into new ecosystems, and these species are both harming the natural resources in these ecosystems and threatening the human use of their resources; and,

WHEREAS, home to the Great Lakes, Michigan's economy depends on the abundance of freshwater for manufacturing, tourism, fishing, public water supplies and agriculture; and,

WHEREAS, unfortunately, more than 180 non-indigenous aquatic invasive species have been introduced to the Great Lakes; many of these invasive species have displaced native species and continue to disrupt habitats and degrade natural, managed and agricultural landscapes; and,

WHEREAS, Michigan is committed to protecting our streams and lakes, and making citizens aware of this growing issue is a vital first step toward improvement; and,

WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to raise awareness of aquatic invasive species in Michigan, and we encourage businesses, industries, environmental groups, community organizations and all Michigan citizens to learn about aquatic invasive species in an effort to prevent the introduction and spread of invasive species in our state;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 11 through June 19, 2011 as Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Week in Michigan.
