May 2012: Exercise is Medicine Month
WHEREAS, physical inactivity and poor nutrition are the third leading causes of preventable death, just behind tobacco use and high blood pressure; and,
WHEREAS, the health and wellness of every Michigan citizen is of utmost importance; as we work toward a healthier Michigan, healthy lifestyle behaviors, including exercise and physical activities, will play a large role in decreasing healthcare costs and helping to prevent various chronic illnesses; and,
WHEREAS, Exercise is Medicine is a national call-to-action, initiated by the American College of Sports Medicine and American Medical Association in 2007; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, we raise awareness of exercise as a preventive health measure that will not only enhance the health, growth and success of our state, but also our nation; we encourage all Michigan citizens to recognize, emphasize and celebrate the valuable health benefits of exercise;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2012 as Exercise is Medicine Month in Michigan.
