April 30 through May 5, 2012: Adult Education Week
WHEREAS, profound economic and technological changes in our state and country have placed new responsibilities on our adult educational system; and,
WHEREAS, adult education is an investment in the people and the future of our great state, providing preventative strategies to lower unemployment, illiteracy levels and government assistance costs; and,
WHEREAS, adult education offers lifelong learning opportunities that improve basic skills such as reading, writing and mathematics; and,
WHEREAS, between 2010 and 2011, nearly 34,000 Michigan citizens participated in adult education programs, including high school completion, general education development, adult basic education and English as a Second Language programs; and,
WHEREAS, during this week, we recognize the importance of adult education in Michigan as it helps prepare our citizens for jobs and career advancements, giving new hope for economic independence and ultimately improving the quality of life for Michigan families;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Monday, April 30 through Saturday, May 5, 2012 as Adult Education Week in Michigan.
