May 2012: Von-Hippel Lindau Awareness Month

WHEREAS, first described in the early 1900s, Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) is a rare, genetic, multi-system disorder characterized by the abnormal growth of tumors in certain parts of the body such as the retina, inner ear, adrenal gland, pancreas, brain and spinal cord; and,

WHEREAS, VHL is frequently misdiagnosed and often undiagnosed; symptoms of VHL may include headaches, problems with balance and walking, dizziness, high blood pressure and vision problems; and,

WHEREAS, though there is no cure, early detection is critical to managing and avoiding complications of VHL by monitoring and treating any tumors found; if untreated, VHL could result in blindness and potential permanent brain damage; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we raise awareness of VHL in Michigan; we encourage all citizens to learn more about this genetic disorder and to support those currently living with VHL;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2012 as Von-Hippel Lindau Awareness Month in Michigan.
