May 2012: Foster Care Month

WHEREAS, serving as a child's primary source of love, self-esteem and identity, the family unit is the foundation of our communities and our state, and every young person in Michigan deserves to live and grow in a stable, safe and loving environment; and,

WHEREAS, more than 13,000 Michigan children live in foster care and the need for foster care, kinship and adoptive families is apparent; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we recognize and thank the individuals, families, organizations, courts and public and private agencies that provide love, affection, support and security to the children in their care; and,

WHEREAS, we join with the Michigan Department of Human Services to encourage citizens of the Great Lakes State to help shape a bright future for all Michigan children by opening their hearts and homes through foster care, mentoring young people in need of guidance or donating time to help children in need;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2012 as Foster Care Month in Michigan.
