May 2012: Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month
WHEREAS, since 1992, the month of May has been officially designated as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, a time for our nation to honor and recognize the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, additionally, the month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States in May of 1843, and the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad, laid mostly by Chinese immigrants, in May of 1869; and,
WHEREAS, Asian-Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia; and,
WHEREAS, the diversity within the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in the United States adds much to the cultural fabric of our state and country, as these groups have shared their many languages, countless traditions and practices of faith; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, we recognize Michigan's Asian American and Pacific Islander citizens; we honor their commitment to leadership and show thanks for sharing such a rich and fascinating heritage;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2012 as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month in Michigan.
