May 2012: Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Month
WHEREAS, home to the Great Lakes and thousands of inland lakes, Michigan's waters serve as our state's most significant resource, and water safety and drowning prevention education is imperative for the citizens of Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, drowning is among the leading causes of accidental death for children age 14 and under in our nation, and thousands of children go to the emergency room after near-drowning incidents each year; and,
WHEREAS, most drowning deaths occur between May and August, and most commonly on the weekends; and,
WHEREAS, during this month, we encourage and remind parents to always watch young children playing in or near any body of water, including bathtubs, pools and lakes, and we urge all Michigan citizens to recognize the vital importance of water safety and drowning prevention education;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2012 as Water Safety and Drowning Prevention Month in Michigan.
