May 2012: Building Safety Month

WHEREAS, Michigan is committed to addressing the critical issues of safety, energy efficiency and sustainability, all of which affect the environment that we live in each and every day; and,

WHEREAS, building safety and fire prevention officials, architects, engineers, builders, laborers, and many others in the construction industry in our state are members of the International Code Council, and it is their priority to develop and implement safe codes for our homes and commercial buildings; and,

WHEREAS, the International Codes are the most widely adopted energy, building safety and fire prevention codes in our nation, and are used by most U.S. cities, counties and states; these modern building codes protect citizens from natural disasters that may occur, including snowstorms, tornadoes and wildfires; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we join with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs to recognize the individuals responsible for ensuring the safety of buildings that we live, work, worship and learn in; we encourage Michigan citizens to consider building safety and sustainability projects to improve their homes and communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2012 as Building Safety Month in Michigan.
