April 20 through April 22, 2012: Global Youth Service Days
WHEREAS, community service and service learning provide opportunities for young people in our state to apply their knowledge, skills, creativity, abilities and unique perspectives to improve Michigan communities, and become active citizens and community leaders; and,
WHEREAS, proven to increase academic achievement, workforce readiness and social and emotional skills, community service and service learning engage Michigan's youth by broadening awareness of the communities they live in; and,
WHEREAS, schools, government agencies, businesses and faith-based organizations are just some of the groups that benefit from community services; and,
WHEREAS, during these days, we join with Youth Service of America and the Michigan Community Service Commission to recognize the youth in our state committed to serving our communities, and encourage citizens of all ages to serve;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Friday, April 20 through Sunday, April 22, 2012 as Global Youth Service Days in Michigan.
