April 2012: Michigan State Police History Month

WHEREAS, on April 19, 1917, Gov. Albert Sleeper created the Michigan State Troops Permanent Force, also known as the Michigan State Constabulary, as an emergency force for the purpose of domestic security during World War I; and,

 

WHEREAS, this new force, under the leadership of Col. Roy C. Vandercook, consisted of five troops of mounted, dismounted and motorized units, totaling 300 men; and,

 

WHEREAS, on March 26, 1919, Public Act 26 reorganized the Constabulary as the permanent, peace-time Michigan State Police; Michigan adopted a new Constitution in 1963, authorizing up to 20 state departments, and Public Act 380 of 1965 reorganized the Michigan Department of State Police as one of these departments; and,

 

WHEREAS, the pride and commitment to service that began in 1917 continues today in every employee and member of the Michigan Department of State Police; during this month, we encourage all Michigan citizens to recognize the Michigan State Police as they celebrate 95 years of service to the Great Lakes state with excellence, integrity and courtesy; 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 2012 as Michigan State Police History Month in Michigan.
