Appointments made to Michigan Humanities Council

LANSING, Mich. - Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointments of Walter Koziol, of Highland, and Tina Van Dam, of Midland, to the Michigan Humanities Council.

The council fosters quality cultural programs, bringing together humanities scholars and the public for fundraising and community engagement.

"The Michigan Humanities Council plays an essential role in preserving our state's cultural heritage," said Snyder. "I am pleased to appoint Walter and Tina to join in that vital work."

Koziol is a certified public accountant and the president of WJK Ltd., which provides strategic planning assistance to growing companies. Previously, he served as an audit partner with BDO Seidman LLP, a global accounting and consulting firm. Koziol is former chair of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants and currently serves on the Association's finance, audit and legislative advisory committees. He earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Detroit. Koziol replaces Maralyn O'Brien.

Van Dam is retired from Dow Chemical Company in Midland. Previously, she served as senior advisor and associate director for the Governance Center and Directors' Institute in New York and senior counsel for corporate governance and finance for the National Association of Manufacturers in Washington, D.C. Van Dam is a member of the Michigan State Bar Association and American Bar Association. She holds a bachelor's degree in communications from Michigan State University and a law degree from the University of Michigan. Van Dam replaces Christine Albertini.

Appointees will serve three-year terms that expire Dec. 31, 2014, and their appointments are not subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
