Snyder joins Medal of Honor Foundation in encouraging citizen service nominations

LANSING, MI - Gov. Rick Snyder today joined the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation in encouraging nominations for the Citizen Service Before Self Honors, which recognizes ordinary Americans who become extraordinary through acts of courage and selflessness.

"This kind of service is what helps make our state and nation better and stronger," Snyder said. "If you know of someone who demonstrates these virtues, please nominate them today. It's a great opportunity to showcase and recognize those who are making a difference."

The nomination deadline is Feb. 10. Individuals may nominate any U.S. civilian who has demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice for others, whether through a single act of heroism or through a series of selfless acts. Nominees who are deceased are eligible. The nominee's actions must epitomize the concept of service before self and must be performed above and beyond one's professional area of responsibility or conduct.

A panel that includes Medal of Honor recipients will select national finalists on February 27. A second panel will select three Citizen Service Before Self Honors recipients who will be announced March 12 and honored on March 23, in conjunction with National Medal of Honor Day. The ceremony will take place at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
