The purpose of in-car mobile videotaping is to establish an audio and/or video recording that is admissible in court as evidence to augment officer investigations.
In early 1990 the Michigan State Police installed Crim Tech in-car video systems in patrol cars. Crim Tech subsequently went out of business, and interest in the in-car video systems waned.
In the mid 1990's some Michigan State Police work sites began to receive in-car video systems via a grant from the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. In 2006, a State of Michigan contract for the purchase of in-car video systems was secured by the Michigan State Police through the Michigan Department of Management and Budget with
Kustom Signals, Inc
. It is also made available to local units of government.
The Michigan State Police currently use the Kustom Signals, Inc.,Eyewitness
in-car video system. There are approximately 614 in-car video systems currently in use at various Michigan State Police work sites throughout the state.
