Meth Investigation

Methamphetamine has become the primary drug of choice in many areas across the United States. In 1996, law enforcement authorities in southwest Michigan began to experience a significant increase in the number of methamphetamine related investigations. Since 1996 the level of methamphetamine activity has steadily increased. Of particular concern is the threat to public safety posed by the illegal clandestine methamphetamine labs. In response to this growing threat, the Michigan State Police Methamphetamine Team was formed in August 2000. The team was decentralized in late 2001. Currently each MSP District has a Regional Clandestine Lab Coordinator. In addition to other duties, these coordinators assist with the coordination, response and investigation of illegal clandestine drug labs.

The primary objective of this program is to identify, investigate and prosecute those individuals involved in the use, possession, distribution, and manufacture of methamphetamine. Team members have been specially trained to safely dismantle clandestine drug labs.

Geographically, the team has statewide responsibility. The team works closely with other state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies. They maintain a liaison between members of the State Police, the judiciary, the mass media, legislature, Michigan Retailers Assoc., Michigan Farm Bureau, Michigan Dept. of Community Health, and the general public relative to ongoing investigations and education.

The Methamphetamine Team provides methamphetamine clandestine drug lab awareness training to public safety personnel around the state.
