Michigan Receives Federal Disaster Aid For Storm Recovery

Contact:  Mark Wesley, MSP/EMD 517/333-5023
Agency: State Police

Lansing, MI – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that families and businesses in 19 Michigan counties will be eligible for federal disaster relief following approval of the state’s request for a major disaster declaration filed by the Governor on June 18.

The declaration by FEMA covers damage to private property from severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that occurred over the period of May 20-24.

"Michigan citizens who were harmed by the unfortunate natural events of late May and who found themselves without insurance coverage to make them whole are now eligible for federal assistance," Granholm said. "Our goal was to act swiftly on behalf of the Michigan families and businesses who needed our help."

The 19 counties eligible for federal aid to affected residents and business owners include: Barry, Berrien, Cass, Genesee, Gladwin, Ingham, Ionia, Jackson, Kent, Livingston, Macomb, Mecosta, Oakland, Ottawa, Sanilac, Shiawassee, St. Clair, St. Joseph and Wayne.

The assistance, to be coordinated by FEMA, can include grants to help pay for temporary housing, home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses. Low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration also will be available to cover residential and business losses not fully compensated by insurance.

Emergency Management officials said that those in the counties designated for aid to affected residents and business owners can begin the disaster application process by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired. The toll-free telephone numbers will be available starting tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week until further notice.

The Emergency Management Division of the Michigan Department of State Police is coordinating the state’s response effort.
