East Lansing - The Michigan State Police will step up patrols for the Memorial Day holiday weekend in conjunction with Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort). In addition, State Police troopers will join other law enforcement agencies in Michigan for the "Click It or Ticket/Buckle Up or Pay Up" mobilization that focuses on the use of safety belts.
"Troopers will take a zero tolerance approach to unbuckled motorists as part of the statewide "Click It or Ticket/Buckle Up or Pay Up" campaign," stated Col. Tadarial J. Sturdivant, Director of the Michigan State Police. "In addition, troopers will pay special attention to drivers who are speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs."
The official Memorial Day weekend begins at 6 p.m., Friday, May 28, and runs through midnight, Monday, May 31. Last year there were 10 fatal traffic crashes resulting in 10 deaths over the Memorial Day weekend. Of those who died, 80 percent were not wearing safety belts. Alcohol was also a factor in 20 percent of the crashes.
"The Michigan State Police want you to have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend," added Colonel Sturdivant. "Please don’t drink and drive, be sure to wear your safety belt, and drive Michigan safely."
Note: During the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the media is encouraged to contact their local Michigan State Police post for the latest in holiday traffic information.
