East Lansing - Michigan State Police Director Colonel Tadarial J. Sturdivant is pleased to announce that Troy Ernst, a forensic scientist at the MSP Grand Rapids Laboratory, is the 2003 recipient of the Floyd R. Bell Jr. Civilian of the Year Award.
Ernst was chosen for the award as a result of his accomplishments both on and off the job and for his efforts to continue the department’s proud tradition of SERVICE through EXCELLENCE, INTEGRITY and COURTESY.
As a forensic scientist in the trace evidence unit, Ernst continuously exceeds expectations by adjusting work procedures to obtain maximum efficiency and developing innovative and creative solutions to complex problems. Ernst’s commitment to excellence is credited with fostering a positive and productive workplace. He is known for his professionalism, determination and diplomacy when helping investigators identify crucial pieces of evidence needed to successfully solve cases.
Beyond his outstanding performance at the laboratory, Ernst is active in his church where he holds a leadership position. He participates in many different church programs including music, Bible study for married couples, Sunday school classes, the servant ministry team and the senior high youth group. In addition, Ernst has participated in and led several overseas mission trips.
Ernst also participates in an inner-city youth basketball outreach program and supports Mel Trotter ministries, a local faith based shelter for the homeless. Recently, Ernst trained two personal pets in the Canine Good Citizen certification process, which enables the dogs to visit and interact with patients at nursing homes and child medical care facilities.
A native of Ida Grove, Iowa, Ernst attended Schleswig High School before attending Michigan State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a masters degree specializing in forensic science. Ernst has worked for the State Police since 1998.
