Lansing - The Michigan State Police Board of Awards is pleased to announce that Detective Sergeant Michael K. Morey of the Ionia Post has been awarded the Michigan State Police Lifesaving Award. He is credited with administering first aid to save the life of another.
While vacationing on Beaver Island, Morey noticed a three-year-old girl being pulled from the water. The girl was unconscious and her father was attempting to perform rescue breathing. Morey instructed a bystander to call 911 and took over the rescue breathing efforts. In a few minutes the child began breathing on her own. Morey then carried her to the roadway where she was turned over to EMS personnel. She was later treated and released from the hospital.
The Michigan State Board of Awards recognizes that Morey’s quick actions and knowledge of first aid techniques saved the child’s life.
Morey enlisted with the department in 1979, and graduated with the 96th Trooper Recruit School. He worked as a trooper at the Pontiac, Detroit and Lansing posts before being transferred to the Ionia Post and promoted to sergeant in 1988. Morey became a detective sergeant in 1992. A native of Grand Rapids, Morey currently lives in Dewitt.
