December 17, 2008 - State Police Focus On Traffic Safety This Weekend

Contact:  Sgt. Jill M. McKelvey, (517) 336-6121
Agency: State Police

EAST LANSING. Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers are joining other state police and highway patrol agencies from across the United States and Canada in hopes of reducing traffic fatalities and crashes this holiday season as part of Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) Lifesaver Weekend. Lifesaver Weekend begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, and continues through midnight on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008.

"Traveling to visit family and friends in advance of Christmas is a holiday tradition for many people," stated Colonel Peter C. Munoz, Director of the MSP. "In order to get motorists to their destinations safely, troopers will be out enforcing the state's driving laws.

"Checking the road conditions before you travel and being prepared by making sure your vehicle is ready for winter travel are critically important measures given Michigan's unpredictable weather," Munoz added.

Motorists can check road conditions statewide by calling 1-800-381-8477 or visiting www.michigan.gov/roadconditions.

Last year, there were five fatal traffic crashes that resulted in five deaths during Lifesaver Weekend.

Starting Friday, MSP troopers are also participating in a statewide drunk driving and safety belt enforcement effort coordinated by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning. Over 200 law enforcement agencies across Michigan are receiving federal traffic safety funds to boost patrols from Dec. 19, 2008, through Jan. 4, 2009, in a further effort to encourage responsible driving this holiday season.
