As temperatures continue to increase, the Michigan State Police (MSP) Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (EMHSD) is encouraging citizens to take precautionary steps for potential flooding as melting snow combines with expected rainfall this week.
The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids issued a flood watch today for portions of central, south central, southwest and west central Michigan. The flood watch is in effect throughthe morning of January 9. A flood watch means there is a possibility of flooding or a flash flood in the area.
"Michigan weather is unpredictable any time of the year, especially during the winter months when the temperature fluctuates drastically," stated Col. Peter C. Munoz, director of the MSP and State Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. "Taking the necessary precautions in advance and avoiding potential flood areas near rivers and streams will help keep citizens safe during a flood situation."
Flood precautionary actions include:
Be aware of streams, rivers, drainage channels and areas known to flood suddenly.
Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters. Even a shallow depth of fast-moving floodwater produces a large amount of force.
Be prepared to evacuate on a moment's notice.
Assemble a portable emergency supply kit for each person with a three day supply of water and food, flashlight, batteries, first aid kit, emergency radio, emergency contact information, and important family documents.
Listen to radio or television stations for local information and weather reports. If told to evacuate, do so as soon as possible.
Bring in outdoor furniture and move valuables to higher places in your home.
