A Michigan State Police motor carrier officer assigned to the Jackson Post seized approximately 1,200 pounds of marijuana from a semi-trailer during a routine traffic stop at the I-94 Grass Lake Scales in Grass Lake Township in Jackson County.
On Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, the officer stopped a semi-tractor and trailer for an equipment violation. During the inspection of the vehicle and driver, the officer noted discrepancies between driver statements and transportation documents. While checking the cargo area of the semi-trailer, the officer discovered 48 bales of marijuana hidden among pallets containing bottles of sports drink. The marijuana has a street value of approximately $1.2 million.
The truck driver was arrested and is being held on a charge of Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Deliver. The driver, a 43 year-old male from Tucson, Arizona, was lodged in the Jackson County Jail pending review by the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office and arraignment on the charge.
Officers from the Jackson Narcotics Enforcement Team (JNET) along with deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department assisted with the seizure and subsequent investigation.
