Students Pledge Safe Schools

Contact:  Sgt. Trudy Rampy, Prevention Services Section, (517) 322-1179

Today students from across the state affirmed their dedication to school safety and violence prevention by reciting a school safety pledge.

At the State Capitol, local students joined representatives from the Michigan Safe Schools Initiative to officially kick-off Michigan's Safe Schools Week, which runs November 4-10, 2007 .  Safe Schools Week calls attention to the fact that every student deserves a safe learning environment and each student plays an important role in school safety and violence prevention.  Across the state over 100,000 pledges will be made during the week.

"The Michigan State Police works closely with students, parents and educators to build a strong and safe school community," said Colonel Peter C. Munoz, Michigan State Police Director.  "Programs like the Teaching, Educating, and Mentoring (T.E.A.M.) School Liaison Program, Michigan' s Law Enforcement Bullying Task Force and the Michigan Safe School Initiative help give every Michigan student the opportunity to learn in a safe environment."

"An ounce of prevention is truly worth not just a pound, but a ton of cure.  We have been able to reach thousands of young people across our state with a message of hope," said Donald Allen, Director of the Office of Drug Control Policy.  "A message that says we care for them and want the very best for their lives.  We have backed up our words by funding effective violence and drug prevention programs.  We plan to continue to support our young people as we continue to make Michigan a state with the most healthy and safe communities in the nation."

"Two factors that have tremendous influence on the classroom environment - safety and teacher quality - and you cannot have one without the other," said Michael Flanagan, State Superintendent of Public Instruction.  "It makes it difficult for students to learn if they do not feel safe in their classroom.  The strategies highlighted by the Michigan Safe Schools Initiative are best practices all schools should adopt in their efforts to keep our children safe from bullying and harassment and our schools free of violence."
