In 1932, Harry Fletcher donated a trophy to encourage stronger marksmanship in the Michigan State Police (MSP) through a pistol competition. Seventy-five years later, the MSP Fletcher Match still recognizes the top marksman in the MSP.
On October 17, over 40 MSP enlisted members representing each area of the state, will compete at the R.V. Gray Pistol Range, 1000 East South Street, Jackson for the 75th Annual Fletcher Match. The event begins at 9 a.m. with the team relay competition. Following lunch, the top performer from each team will participate in a shoot-off to determine the overall winner. The match will conclude at approximately 2 p.m. with an awards presentation.
The MSP Fletcher Match is open to spectators. The public is encouraged to attend this unique display of law enforcement ability.
The MSP Fletcher Match is named after Alpena native Harry Fletcher, 1884 - 1956. After studying chemical engineering at the University of Michigan, Fletcher returned to Alpena where he rose to president of the Fletcher Paper Company. He also served on the county road commission and as a member of the Isle Royale Park Commission.
The MSP Fletcher Match was created to promote excellent marksmanship through competition.
