Michigan State Police (MSP) motor carrier officers inspected 115 commercial motor vehicles resulting in 79 driver and equipment safety violations during a one-day enforcement operation spanning I-75 from Sault Ste. Marie to the state's southern border. Their efforts were part of a five-state enforcement operation held on
Sept. 12, 2007, aimed at reducing highway deaths.
In total, 1,290 commercial motor vehicles were inspected in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky, resulting in 2,216 driver and equipment safety violations.
"Working cooperatively with our partners from adjacent states allows us to more effectively address the traffic safety issues we have in common," stated Capt. Robert R. Powers, Jr., commander of the MSP Traffic Safety Division. "By leveraging our resources we can more efficiently ensure a safe environment for the motoring public."
MSP motor carrier officers placed 3 vehicles and 5 drivers out-of-service for serious violations. Another 90 traffic citations were issued for a variety of violations including unsafe equipment, overweight vehicles, speeding and violating the state's "move over law."
Additional joint efforts among these states will take place throughout the year with a primary focus being on drivers and companies maintaining compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, which will enhance the safety of all drivers and reduce highway deaths.
