On Wednesday, Michigan State Police (MSP) motor carrier officers will join their counterparts from
Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky for a 24-hour coordinated enforcement effort aimed at unsafe commercial vehicles and drivers in an effort to improve traffic safety and reduce crashes. Enforcement in Michigan will occur along I-75 from Sault Ste. Marie to the southern border.
Officers will be on the lookout for the unsafe operation of commercial vehicles with a focus on driver factors that contribute significantly to crash causation including speed, careless driving, driver qualifications, hours of service and the transportation of illegal contraband.
Capt. Robert R. Powers, Jr., commander of the MSP Traffic Safety Division, spoke to the importance of collaborating with other states to work toward crash reduction. He said, "The Michigan State Police is committed to ensuring a safe environment for motorists and highway workers alike. Multi-state enforcement operations allow law enforcement officers to work together toward this common goal. We are pleased to be a part of these operations and together we will continue to aggressively pursue compliance with state and federal regulations. The number of violations documented during previous multi-state enforcement efforts underscores the need for continued strict enforcement of safety regulations governing commercial vehicles."
Additional joint enforcement efforts will occur throughout the year with a focus on driver and motor carrier compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
